My possibly surprising inspiration to blogging

We all get inspirations in life from different things, different people and different places. My inspiration may seem unlikely but this is about my unquestionable inspiration to blogging! By far the #1 reason I started blogging, back in 2007, was from my man Jimmy. I met Jimmy in college up at the Harvard of the North Bay, aka: Sonoma State University. Jimmy was pledging the frat with my roommate and I started hanging out with those guys. Before I go on you are likely picturing the stereotypical “frat boy.” That is a white guy, hat on backwards, sunglasses, frat T-shirt, etc…. Maybe you go as far as to stereotype him as rich, from the suburbs and probably drives a nice car, right!? Well, actually, Jimmy is black, from Compton, and I don’t know if rich or poor but doesn’t matter as I already blew up your stereotypical vision, right!?

Why Jimmy? Why did he inspire me to start blogging in 2007 and really even today, in 2024!? WHY? Jimmy wrote the best urban/street blogs I have ever seen. I’ll post some links. Probably the thing I most appreciated is that you felt like he was saying was REAL. Sort of like NWA in the 80’s Jimmy had the voice of the street on his pages. As one who has always been fascinated by rap music and the urban/street lifestyle I would check Jimmy’s page EVERY day hoping for a new post. His posts were about the tails of Tha BossMack TopSoil. He actually posted under the blogspot website TopMackN___ and as he described it a site dedicated to the great adventures of “TopSoil” in that offices of BossMack….

Some days his posts were long and some days there was nothing but any day there was a post was a treat. Besides opening the door to a side of the world that I don’t know much about he did so in a real way. For example, one of my favorite things he said was that he loved being back in Compton, or as he called it “Bompton” (perhaps a nod to the Bloods street gang that he may or may not have been a member of at some point) he felt rejuvenated. He explained that he loved being home in his old neighborhood with a large number of other black people. That was his home, those were the people he most identified with, and there he just said it. That’s what he liked. The way he described being back home, even if it meant not stop at red lights at night so as to reduce the chances of getting car jacked, reminded me we all feel comfortable where we feel most comfortable. It’s not right or wrong it’s just how he felt.

Jimmy’s stories, day after day, would entertain me. Perhaps because I was a white suburban guy I found his tales of Compton… errrr Bompton to be much more exciting than the tales of the suburbs of Sacramento!? Perhaps because he was living a seemingly exciting life as a single guy with a variety of young ladies to keep him company… while I was living the suburban life with two screaming babies at home. Or perhaps something else. I don’t know. Doesn’t matter. I just liked them! As Jimmy’s empire expanded he got really into a building T-shirt business (BossMack Streetwear) which he still has and then into podcasting. As those interests increased Jimmy stopped writing his blogs and I still, to this day, miss those!

I note he used to post under the name TopMackNigga but his character, in his posts, was often named TopSoil. I note his Youtube page is under the BossMackTopSoil name. YouTube probably didn’t want the “N” word, eh!? Again though I like the way Jimmy plays with words here.

I told Jimmy, back in the day, that I felt he could write books. I was really into Harlan Coben books at the time. I felt like Jimmy was an unpolished Harlan Coben, That is, Harlan would just tell stories, fictional for the most part, about things he knew – rich people in New York city, living in the suburbs of New York city, being Jewish, etc…. I told Jimmy that I felt like he had just as much to bring and there’s less competition! At the end of the day the guy with the stories has to want to write and I wish Jimmy had written more and even written some books… or movies!? I am serious! Read some of his old posts and tell me there isn’t an audience for those stories!

I just picked this random paragraph of his from 2009. I apologize, in advance for the profanity, treatment of women, and violence, but I take it as Jimmy just reporting on a day in his life… real life. We don’t have to like it but I suspect this was an accurate reporting on what he saw.  Again READER WARNING – ADULT CONTENT: “Rock was in tha middle of Vant’s front yard arguing with with Wanda, I looked across tha street and Rocks new Bitch was watching tha whole episode with hostile eyes. Tha Niggas that were buffing in tha drive way stopped and were taking it all in laughing like a muthafucka. Wanda was racked with emotion, Rock tried to grab her, she snatched away and said in a vicious tone “So you want that Bitch over there, You want that Bitch?”, Rock said “Look, Im with her Now, Why are you even here, What tha fuck is wrong wit you?” Wanda was breathing hard, she said “Okay Rock, Okay Nigga, You can have that Bitch” then she turned around and walked calmly toward her car that was parked behind Rocks new bitch somewhat. Rock followed Wanda to tha street, As Wanda seemed to reach her car, she took off running towards tha New Bitches car. Then with tha window down on tha driver side Wanda got off at least three clean uncontested devastating right’s to tha new bitches forehead and neck. Rock sprinted across tha street and slapped tha shit outta Wanda, Wanda ran and regrouped, Tha new bitch was trying to get herself together, she was leaking a little and dazed, but she wanted to fight. Neighbors were coming outside, Vant yelled “Rock, Nigga tha police is about to roll, wrap this shit up” Rock didn’t respond, he tried to grab tha New Bitch but she evaded Rock and started chasing Wanda, who now seemed scared to fight tha New Bitch lol. So now Wanda was being chased by tha New Bitch and tha New Bitch was being chased by Rock, they ran around 4 or 5 parked cars before Rock caught tha New Bitch and took her to her car. That shit looked like some little kids playing except it was serious as fuck. DaDa had caught up with Wanda and held her back so Rock and his New Bitch could leave, lol.”

I should add that Jimmy sells shirts on the web and in a few stores. Check his stuff out here… no, it’s not for everybody, but I love his creativity! He has gotten many celebs to model his gear also. I appreciate that hustle that Jimmy brings to the world! Here is Snoop Dogg wearing one of Jimmy’s big sellers – the Bitch Relax line. Not something that I am likely to wear but he sells a lot of them! Here is a link of all the celebs who have wore his gear. Yes, a lot of rappers but it’s a pretty impressive group!

Here’s a link to some of Jimmy’s old stuff. If you go on there and buy a shirt or something be sure to tell him you’re one of my readers. He’ll appreciate that as will I!
